Delightful Things to Welcome October!

It’s October, which for some of us is a national holiday - pumpkin spice lattes are legal again, the leaves are getting crunchy if you live where there are seasons, you can hear the marching band playing at the high school football game a couple of blocks away (ahhhhh memories!), and best of all…

IT’S SPOOPY SEASON!

We hope to meet you there!

To celebrate, I’ve gathered up a stack of vintage Halloween postcards, cleaned them up, and sized them so they will print out perfectly at 4 x 6 in. They’re in this google drive and free to use however you’d like - enjoy!

Here are some other things to put a smile on your face!

The BBC sound library now has over 33,000 sound effects FREE for you to download! These were released as part of BBC’s RemArc Program, which is “designed to help trigger memories in people with dementia using BBC Archive material as stimulation.” I wasn’t familiar with Reminiscence Therapy, but for those of us who’ve spent time comforting a loved one with dementia this makes a lot of sense and is something we do instinctively - showing them old family photos and listening to their favorite music with them. When my grandmother needed to move into a care home she was lucky to share a room with a woman she’d grown up with and it was both sweet and heartbreaking to see them interacting as though they were young.

I went straight to the animal sounds to see if there was a recording of my favorite frog - the coqui. Just look at this adorable face:

So cute!

I was recently shopping for some new jeans and maybe a new sweater or two to go with them. Maybe it was just the store I was in, but all of the sweaters looked like this:

a very boring beige sweater that hides your neck

There’s a common misperception that when women reach a certain age they need to start disappearing themselves beneath appropriately bland, shapeless garments that hide their necks.

Pffffft. 🙄

Nonsense, I say. Be like Baddie Winkle and wear what you want. Let them stay mad about it.

This Alice in Wonderland sweater from No Jeans is giving me life!

And you can sign me up for anything Farm Rio, especially this sweater:

Those balloon sleeves! 😍

vintage halloween postcard bobbing for apples

Are you old enough to have bobbed for apples as a Halloween activity? When I was in school the rule was if you drooled on an apple it was yours whether you managed to pick it up or not. That was great progress from 1911, the year this postcard was made! But today? EEEEEK NO

I'm told that apple cider donuts are a regional thing specific to the northeast part of the US? This looks like an excellent recipe if you suffer from lack of apple cider donuts. Making it this weekend, will report back. Come visit me on Threads to see the finished result!

I leave you with this glorious clip from the Carol Burnett Show, where the inimitable Maggie Smith teaches her Carol to speak proper English.

What a gem!

Here's to hoping October is full of more treats than tricks!
